My Learning to Read Series- Part 1

Welcome to my latest series as part of my part-time homeschooling attempts. I have been trying to teach Princess to read in the last few weeks and we started with Word Families and familiarized ourselves with the "-at" family first. I used the Paint Chip idea I saw on The Snail's Trail blog. We are working on single beginning letters rather than including blended letters first. I am amazed at how quickly Princess picked up the concept. But I did learn not to push her to practice for too long because she loses focus easily. We used the white board too as a reinforcer to the beginning...
So I sat down the other night and came up with an idea to help her with her recognition of the word families. I dug in deep and opened my PSE program to create Word Family Sorting Mat with Words. So I thought I would share with you the first of the series, which features 3 sorting sheets for word families: -at, -an, and -ar, along with words to match to the sorting mats (I did include some blended words but not a lot. There are blank squares if you want to add the blended words yourself.)

Easter themed Game and Printable

Hi everyone,
Well, I finally did it...I came up with a game and printable for Princess all on my own. Now I want to pass it on to you.

Game: Easter Egg Counting
Goal: match the number of items counted, stored inside the easter eggs, to the correct number card
Materials needed:

• Colourful eggs (kind you can open and put candy in)
• Pompoms (I picked mine at Dollarama- dollar store here in Canada), you could use anything that they can count (age-appropriate of course)
• Download, Print, Cut out and Laminate the Cards I created

(#7 egg gone---Monkey took off with it
had to chase him down after the Princess
settled and I convinced her to choose another egg)

This was a hit and I am thinking that I may do a reverse counting game, with eggs filled with numbers and Princess will have to count the pompoms and match the card....maybe another printable by Monday or two....now need to think of something for Monkey to do... maybe shape matching with the eggs...He has come to love shape matching games and colour games....hmmmmm, maybe more than 1 or 2 new printables.

I hope your little one enjoys...Princess did that's for sure!!!

NB: I made mine up with scrap paper I had and markers, for a quick game. fancied them up for you with a Printable.

On a side note, Princess is really getting big and Monkey....well, here he is...

that is another story...let's just say
Mama cried for 10 minutes at the sight after Daddy
took the shears to the bangs....a trim is all I wanted.
Not to mention Monkey never sits still for us.
But its only hair and it is growing fast, he's the ring bearer
in my baby sis' wedding this May.

We received out invites to the wedding today and I will share them and her tutorial with you as we get closer to the Wedding...we (she and I will have lots of tutes for you). Stay tuned!

Homeschooling--- Letter Ss

We are working on the Letter Ss this week so I would love to share my learning tool we are using. Here is a download for your homeschooling. Please let me know what you think, I modelled them to go with Erica's, Confessions of a Homeschooler, Letter of the Week as an add on to give more supplements to learning letters. I have more for other letters but I am still working on them right now, such as P is for Princess and M is monster, and more.

My "Aaahhaa moment" & a Simple Homeschool Tutorial

I have seen many of these baggie things around the blogosphere for use for teaching letters to kiddies but when I made one the way I seen on Confessions of a Homeschooler (scroll down a bit). But I was always in fear that Princess would make a mess if the bag ever exploded or in her stubbornness she decided to tear it open and enjoy a little painting. So when I was separating our big meat purchase from Costco the other night it came to me how I could solve this fear of the exploding bag. I was putting the meat through the FoodSaver sealing them and vacuum packing them for the freezer...and there it was my "Aahhhaaa moment". I could use the FoodSaver to seal the bag and I wouldn't have the fear factor going on every time we did letter tracing. So I put together a simple yet helpful to me tutorial for you. There may be one out there somewhere but here is mine.

1. gather your supplies:
FoodSaver (or other vacuum food sealer machine),
pre-cut sealing bag or cut your own
& hair gel (Dollar store or big box version) 

2. fill bag with hair gel

3. set vacuum sealer to "seal only" setting ...do not vacuum seal!!!

4. Seal the bag

Ta--da!!!!

See it was that easy and it works really good!!!! I hope you enjoyed this little tutorial and here's to more of those "Aahaa Moments" for me!!!
