Little Green Books cover a variety of hot topics out there from teaching children about what dangers global warming brings, recycling benefits, how to plant a garden, how to help endangered animals, among other environmental hot zones. The books also have glossary of terms to educate parents and kids about environmental vocabulary. F
rom storybooks to cloth books to novelty board books, Little Green Books are a unique, innovative new series,that helps to plant the seeds of eco-friendly consciousness at an early age so that we can grow a generation of earth-friendly readers.
I was offered the chance to review some of the titles that are a part of the Little Green Books series. The books I received to review:
The Polar Bears' Home, is an opportunity for children to learn about the effects that global warming is having on the Polar Bears and their habitat. It looks at the changes through the eyes of a little girl and her father in the Arctic. It also discusses how kids can help to reduce the Earth's warming and save the Polar Bears and their home.
My Review: This is a very educational book that discusses the changes that global warming cause for the polar bears and the Arctic, from breaking up the pack ice to causing them to overheat. It looks at the polar bears' plight from a little girl's view. At the end, the book shows things that make a difference in reducing global warming and help the polar bears: recycling, planting a tree, reducing our energy use. My almost 3 yo really enjoyed this book even though she didn't quite understand all of the concepts discussed. She did recognize the polar bear and asked me often 'why' and kept noting how sad it was that the polar bears were lost from their mommy. Overall a great way to explain the global warming effects on the environment and polar bears. My daughter had me stop reading so we could go get her polar bear softies to reassure them while we were reading that everything was going to be okay. She then asked me if we were recycling, and I explained what recycling meant as well as that we were recyclers. She also asked if we could plant a tree and I said that we would to celebrate her and the Cheeky Monkey's birthdays (we'll keep you posted on that one). The illustrations were very beautiful.
Easy to Be Green, is an activity book with lots of eco-friendly and simple things that help to show children how easy it is to be "
Green." It looks at the environmental topics of global warming, carbon footprints, recycling, reusing, reducing, composting at home, green cleaning, endangered animal awareness and finding your voice when it comes to how children feel about the environment and the issues facing it.
My Review: This book is a little old for my kids, but it would be a definite use to school age children. Not quite geared to all who would be purchasing it in the rest of the planet though, only mentions the US government when it comes to writing your elected members. It does give a great bit of facts on what you can do for composting and recycling as well as reducing garbage. It notes changes that have happened since awareness has grown by the public and pressured our governments to take a stand for the environment. It could cater to all ages from 3 up if it had included little things that they could do as well. Overall, a great addition to school curriculum as far as education resources and workbook during science.
This Is Our World, is an interactive book with 2 puzzles (double sided). It is a story about how little things we do help to taking care of the Earth. The book is very colourful and goes through different
areas where children can help the Earth through planting trees / gardens, recycling and cleaning up the environment. As you read you collect the puzzle pieces and at the end of the book is a space to assemble the puzzles.
My Review: I really enjoyed reading this book to my daughter because she like collecting the pieces as we went along and the colourful illustrations were eye-catching to her. We enjoyed putting the puzzles together over and over again. It will definitely be apart of our regular reading and activities. It showed how kids are able to get involved at various places, such as parks, home, school and the beach.
My First Garden, is an educational book that teaches about growing a garden as well as colours. It is from the point of view of a mother and daughter preparing soil, sewing seeds, watering the seeds to make their first garden, watching the seeds grow into vegetables of all colours, and eating them in soup. The book is shaped like a basket with a handle cut out so it can be carted around where ever a child may choose to read.
My Review: I really enjoyed this book along with my 3 yo, because she could name all the colours and the vegetables as we read the book. It is very much geared to the preschool and up age group. After reading the book, my daughter went on to pretend she was gardening the rest of the afternoon (it has given me some ideas for her "Tickle Trunk"- Mr. Dress Up circa 1970s & 1980s, it's like pretend prop box). It was fun interacting and helping her learn as we read along. This really shows kids how if we become a little self-sufficient with growing our own garden and reaping the rewards of food, we are also helping the effects on the environment on various levels (underlying theme of the story for parents to explain to their children here). My daughter also liked carrying the book like basket.
Wonder Pets: Save the Tree, is a book from the
Nickelodeon's Big Green Help series of books that takes
the kid-driven initiative approach to saving the Planet, using the Wonder Pets characters. The book is based on the episode that won the 2006 Environmental Media Award for Children's Animated Television! Here the Wonder Pets travel to the city to save a little tree that is struggling to survive in a trash-strewn empty lot. They work together to clean up the lot, giving the tree more sunlight and space. They use rain water to provide the tree with nourishment. And use their teamwork to plant a garden around it with their new city friends. The tree then gives everyone a special springtime surprise! My Review: This was a great book to read with my daughter, she is a avid Wonder Pets fan (I am a closet fan...shhhh, don't tell anyone). We sang the song at the point in the story when the Wonder Pets would as well, always fun! I have to say this book was very cute in the way it touched on the topic of cleaning up the environment. It also on the front inside cover discussed things to help the trees help the Earth. A very fun and educational book in the Big Green Help series. By far my daughter's favourite of all the books we reviewed.
I also received a plantable book marker from Little Green Books, with instructions on how to plant it. We will be doing this tomorrow and will post pictures on how we did and how the plants are doing
